Unification Minister Chung meets with U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Kevin Kim

“South Korea will cooperate for resumption of North Korea-U.S. dialogue”

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young met with U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Korea Kevin Kim on Nov. 25 and discussed cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula and policies toward North Korea and unification.

 

Meeting with Ambassador Kim at the Government Complex Seoul that day, Minister Chung stated, “South Korea and the U.S. will closely cooperate to resume North Korea-U.S. dialogue.”

 

 

He also remarked, “The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju has opened a window of opportunity to initiate dialogue between North Korea and the U.S.”

 

Minister Chung also congratulated Chargé d'Affaires Kim on his new appointment and explained the South Korean government's policy framework for North Korea and unification aimed at restoring inter-Korean relations and achieving peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.

 

He emphasized, “Given that a U.S.-China summit is scheduled for next April, we assess that the period ahead is crucial. The South Korean government will intensify its efforts as a pacesetter to facilitate the realization of a North Korea-U.S. summit.”

 

The Ministry of Unification stated, “Both sides agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation in the process of establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula, based on the strong ROK-U.S. alliance.”
