Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back visited the Marine Corps Special Reconnaissance Battalion on Aug. 27, emphasizing that training should be rigorous and practical to develop conditioned reflexes through realistic exercises.

Defense Minister Ahn visited the Marine Corps Special Reconnaissance Battalion and a small unit under the 2nd Marine Division, where he inspected their readiness posture and encouraged soldiers engaged in security operations.

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back became the first defense minister to visit Maldo Island, a front-line island on the West Sea.

Minister Ahn was briefed on the operational status of the Special Reconnaissance Battalion, part of the Special Reconnaissance Brigade, which was officially established on July 1, 2025.

He said, “I feel truly reassured and proud to meet the Marine Corps’ most elite reconnaissance unit, which accepts only 1% of its members. I expect you to become the most advanced special reconnaissance battalion, one that never loses a battle by inheriting the bravery and victorious spirit of the Marines who came before you.”

Minister Ahn also said, “Combat sense and experience gained through realistic training translate into the capabilities needed to accomplish missions in actual battles. I urge you to build ample experience through practical training so that you can respond instinctively and effectively.”

Minister Ahn then visited Maldo Island, where he shared a meal with Marines dedicated to security operations.

He said, “I am greatly reassured to see you standing vigilant and spirited while serving on the remote front-line island of Maldo, far from your families. Your hard work and dedication today will serve as a driving force throughout your lives.”
