The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced to roll out Korea’s first driverless autonomous shuttle, equipped with next-generation automotive design and advanced self-driving technology, along the Cheonggyecheon Stream as early as late September.
The new shuttle was developed and built using domestic technology by Korea’s leading autonomous driving company Autonomous A2Z. Designed specifically for autonomous operation, the vehicle has no driver’s seat or steering wheel.

The vehicle is a small bus (i.e., 11-seater with 9 seats) designed from the ground up for autonomous operation. It features a U-shaped seating layout, a large display that shows the driving status and route information, and a wheelchair lift, among other high-tech amenities.
The route is set along the Cheonggyecheon Stream to promote Seoul’s leadership in autonomous mobility and to draw international visitors to the city’s popular tourist attraction. Two shuttles will run on a 4.8-km loop from Cheonggye Plaza to Cheonggye 5-ga (Gwangjang Market) and back to Cheonggye Plaza on weekdays from 10 AM to 5 PM (free of charge; no service on holidays).
The autonomous shuttle began test operations on Fri, Aug. 22, and public rides may begin as early as late September after system training and safety review by experts.
The city expects the driverless autonomous shuttle to give citizens a preview of future public transport—with no driver’s seat or steering wheel, it is also expected to boost tourism in the Cheonggyecheon Stream area and support local businesses.
