Diplomacy Journal Kim Tae Yeon | The Embassy of Peru in Seoul will host a reception commemorating the 205th anniversary of Peruvian independence on July 28, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul in Gwanghwamun, Jongno-gu.

The event is organised by Ambassador Paul Duclos and his wife, Jeanette Somocurcio, and is intended to celebrate Peru's independence milestone while reinforcing the friendship and cooperative ties between Korea and Peru. The Embassy plans to welcome diplomatic representatives from across the international community, government officials, figures from the business and cultural sectors, and members of the press to mark the occasion together.

A New Stage in Economic, Defense, and Cultural Cooperation

As one of South America's key nations, Peru has maintained close cooperation with Korea, underpinned by its abundant mineral resources and strategic geographic position. In recent years, bilateral collaboration has expanded notably across the defense, infrastructure, energy, mining, and digital technology sectors.

Reflecting this growing economic partnership, several leading Korean companies will support this year's anniversary celebration. Firms from the defense industry — including LIG Nex1, Hanwha Aerospace, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), Hyundai Rotem, KAC, and POSCO International — are participating as sponsors, underscoring the expanding vision for economic cooperation between the two countries.

Peru's national coat of arms, a recurring symbol of the country's identity at such events, reflects this same spirit of abundance: the vicuña represents the nation's animal resources, the cinchona tree symbolises its plant resources, and the golden cornucopia signifies mineral wealth and economic prosperity — together embodying Peru's rich natural heritage.

Six Decades of Friendship Since 1963

Korea and Peru have steadily expanded cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and educational fields since establishing diplomatic relations in 1963. Trade and investment between the two countries have grown consistently under the framework of their Free Trade Agreement, while cultural and people-to-people exchanges have remained active.

The global spread of K-culture and the Korean Wave has fuelled growing interest in Korean culture within Peru, while interest in Peru's traditional culture and tourism resources has likewise been on the rise in Korea.

An official at the Embassy of Peru in Seoul said the upcoming independence day celebration is expected to deepen friendship between the citizens of both nations and serve as a meaningful opportunity to lay the groundwork for future cooperation.
